National Science Week 2023 ran from 12 August to 20 August. The 2023 theme was 'innovation: powering future industries'.
We started the week by looking at Sustainable Innovation, and spent time investigating paper – how to recycle it and how to upcycle it.
On Day 2 students studied Flight Innovation by creating vehicles that took to the sky. In Primary, students created and tested paper planes to investigate the key principles of flight. In Secondary, students looked at the impact that heat has when lifting a sheet of plastic into the air, as they simulated Hot Air Balloons!
Day 3 featured Food Innovation and began with Primary students using a chemical reaction to create food spheres made out of juice or yoghurt. Secondary students sampled their way through stations trying to work out which option at each station had the imposter food option. For the sake of this activity students were trying to find what innovative food tasted just like its original version.
The week concluded with Technology Innovation. Our younger learners in Primary learnt all about the 8 digit code that computers talk with (called the Binary Code) when they made their initials in Binary Code Bag Tags. Our older learners focussed their sights a little 3D as they made and played with holograms.
