French Bilingual Program

As of 2026 we are proud to offer a French Bilingual Program from Prep to Year 4 and are the only school in Brisbane with a Secondary French Bilingual Program.

From 2029 we will be the only Brisbane school to offer a seamless French Bilingual pathway from Prep to Yr 9.

The College intends to continue extending its school provision by opening a new year level every year for both Primary & Secondary until the program is from Prep to Yr 9.

French trained, native French speaking teachers have been recruited to work alongside our Australian teachers on this innovative program. All teachers are also required to be registered with Queensland College of Teachers.

Curricula and learning styles in the FBP are harmonised for an ideal learning experience. Our students then realise that the English and French curricula overlap, just as subjects are linked.

Families receive an Australian Report card.

AEFE Accreditation

In July 2026 Whites Hill State College was delighted to receive AEFE Acreditation for Prep to Year 3.

A Global Network: Our school joins a global network of more than 600 accredited French schools across 138 countries.

AEFE Accreditation: What It Means for Your Child

  • High-Quality Education: AEFE accreditation, granted by the French Ministry of Education, ensures that the school meets the highest academic, teaching, and organisational standards of the French education system.
  • Seamless Transfers: Your child can easily transfer to any other French school worldwide without needing to sit for entrance or placement exams.
  • Regular Quality Checks: Accredited schools are reviewed regularly to ensure they maintain high standards, employ qualified French-trained teachers, and welcome both French and international students.

Choosing an AEFE-accredited school means giving your child access to a world-class education that is recognised and respected globally.

Why Bilingual Programs Outshine Immersion for Language and Culture

Bilingual programs are a better option for fostering both linguistic and cultural development, as they prioritise bilingualism and biliteracy by teaching academic content equally in two languages. Unlike immersion programs, which focus primarily on second-language fluency, bilingual programs also preserve and develop a child’s native language, promoting cultural identity and diversity.

Research shows that bilingual education enhances cognitive skills like problem-solving and metalinguistic awareness, while also leading to long-term academic advantages in areas like reading and maths.

For families seeking to maintain cultural heritage and equip their children with well-rounded linguistic and cognitive skills, bilingual programs offer a more comprehensive approach.

French Bilingual Program - Ratio and subjects

Primary students work with two teachers: one teacher instructs in English on the 'English' day and the other instructs in French on the 'French' days.
On some occasions classes may have one teacher who teaches bothin French and English.

Prep - Year 2 are 80% (4 days) of French curriculum taught in French, 20% (1 day) Australian Curriculum taught in English and has bridges between curricula, languages and cultures.

In Year 3 & 4 the ratio adjusts to 60% French (3 days) 40 % English (2 days); as the students understanding grows and the Australian Curriculum demands rise.

In Years 7-9, the ratio is currently 25% French, 75% English with students studying French Literature from the French curriculum and History and Geography from a French-Australian harmonised curriculum.

Primary – Starting strong in French and English

Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 work as 80% (4 days) of French-Australian harmonised curriculum taught in French and 20% (1 day) Australian Curriculum taught in English.  Students in this program are assessed according to both French Ministry of National Education criteria and Australian standards.

When your child starts Prep, they are in “Cycle 1". By the end of Cycle 1, Prep students will have acquired knowledge in several areas. The four main areas of learning from the B.O.E.N (Bulletin Officiel de l'Education Nationale = French Education Official Instructions) are:
