Excellence programs

STEM program

Whites Hill State College offers enrichment and extension learning opportunities for gifted and talented students in Year 5 through our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) program.

The STEM program engages students in:

  • Higher-order, creative and lateral thinking skills and processes
  • Problem solving and decision making
  • Appropriate degrees of independence and learning to work interdependently.

Flip learning

In the flip classroom, the roles and expectations of students and teachers change. Basically, in the traditional teacher-centred classroom, the teacher is the primary source of information and students learn new content at school. In contrast, the flip classroom shifts to a learner-centred approach where students have an opportunity to learn new information at home prior to their lesson, (via video/audio recordings, podcasts, websites, readings) and in-class time is dedicated to exploring, applying and evaluating topics in greater depth and in collaboration with other students. As a result students are actively involved in knowledge construction and meaning making. The teacher acts as facilitator of the learning journey and provides explicit and personalised feedback to all students.
